A supply or return air grille has a visible face that collects dust and a duct behind it that is part of a mechanical system. Cleaning the face is straightforward: it improves appearance, reduces the dust that falls back into the room, and does not touch anything the building's mechanical contractor is responsible for. Cleaning the duct is an entirely separate discipline with its own standards, equipment and reporting requirements.

That distinction is worth stating because a client who asks about vent cleaning may mean either. If the concern is dust visible from below, a periodic surface clean of the grille faces addresses it. If the concern is air quality, odour or a system that has never been serviced, the answer is a duct cleaning specialist, and no amount of surface work will substitute for it.

Vertical fabric blinds, aluminium venetians, roller blinds and timber slats each behave differently, and a single instruction to clean the blinds ignores that. Fabric verticals are usually vacuumed with a brush head and spot treated; aluminium venetians can be wiped slat by slat, which takes far longer than most people expect; roller blinds are wiped where the fabric tolerates it and can be permanently marked where it does not.

Because the time cost varies so much, blinds belong in periodic work with the type and the area recorded. Removing blinds for off-site cleaning, taking down a roller for laundering, or rehanging anything is a different job again and carries a real risk of damage to brackets and mechanisms. Where blinds have deteriorated, the honest answer is replacement rather than an increasingly aggressive cleaning attempt.

Wiping the outside of a sealed diffuser or a batten fitting within safe reach is a cleaning task. Removing a diffuser to clean inside it, cleaning around exposed wiring, replacing a tube or globe, or handling any fitting that is damaged or flickering are electrical tasks. The exclusion is absolute even when the fitting looks simple, because the risk is not visible from the outside.

The practical arrangement is to include external dusting of accessible fittings in a periodic list, and to report anything that needs opening or repairing. In a healthcare or education setting where diffusers accumulate insects and dust visibly, a site is often better served by scheduling an electrician to remove and clean covers than by asking a cleaner to work close to a fitting they are not qualified to open. That way the fittings are done properly and nobody works outside their qualification.
