Many pits, sumps and interceptors meet the definition of a confined space, which brings a permit system, atmospheric testing, rescue arrangements and specific training. None of that belongs in a cleaning agreement, and a cleaner leaning into a pit is not a lesser version of the controlled activity; it is the same hazard without the controls. The exclusion applies regardless of how shallow the space looks.

The useful contribution a cleaning provider makes here is observation. A drain that backs up repeatedly, a grate that is damaged, an odour that appears at a particular time or liquid appearing where it should not are all worth reporting with a date. That information helps a site distinguish a blockage from a plumbing defect and gives it something to hand to the contractor who does hold the licence.
